SITE SPECIFIC INSTALLATION “LAND

beautifullife_Australian artist Ian Strange has revealed his latest sculptural-cum-architectural work for the 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian art at the art gallery of South Australia. The site-specific public installation is the structural recreation of the artist’s own 1920’s suburban-style home in Australia. Positioned on the forecourt of the gallery, “landed” has seemingly fallen from the sky, the all-matte-black mass breaking the surface of the ground it sits on. Detritus from the supposed crash surrounds the half-burried house, a direct and playful thematic reference to the Wizard of Oz, and the sudden interruption of western culture motifs now popularizing in Australia. Juxtaposing the neo-classical composition of the museum it settles in front of, “landed” at the same time materializes the sense of isolation sometimes experienced in suburban landscapes, and amalgamates two distinct architectural references into the urban fabric.
