junsekino forms a lush courtyard at the center of tare house in bangkok

designboom_situated in a suburban area of bangkok, thailand, junsekino has designed ‘tare house‘ for an indian family. built as a place for the client to enjoy their retirement, they desired a new residence to reflect the thai style pavilion with natural light and a lush garden. the project combines materiality and a variety of spatial experiences to give the building its own interesting and unique character.

to create a quiet environment for the family, the architect decided to put a private court in the middle of the site and surround it with functional spaces. defined as a transition space of light, sound and ventilation, the main concept designed this courtyard as a stone yard that would require less maintenance. furthermore, this open area separates the house into 2 sides for public and private space, connected by a walkway in the middle. the private side is where bedrooms are located while the public side is composed of living room and kitchen.

most activities during daytime are found on the right wing of the house while at night, the activities are shifted to the other side. the architect also moved the building’s core in order to decrease the solidity of the mass. as one enters into the inner court, they’ll perceive the other aspect of the building from the interior elevation.

the project is characterized by the use of natural materials such as stone and timber. the use of ‘arches’ help alleviate the density of the stone wall. the combination between antiqueness and newness of material is also conveyed in this residence. in some parts, old materials, including wood or even furniture from their previous house, have been used as part of the interior space. this provides a connection between past and present, old and new
