Clyfford Still Museum announces official launch of Clyfford Still Catalogue Raisonne of the Complete Works

artdaily_DENVER, CO.- The Clyfford Still Museum announced the official launch of Clyfford Still: The Complete Works – Catalogue Raisonné. This landmark publication documents all known works by the artist. The long-anticipated major scholarly project will present Still’s entire oeuvre for the first time, including paintings, works on paper, sculpture, and lost works.

Clyfford Still, a leading first-generation artist of the Abstract Expressionist movement, created nearly 4,000 works of art during his 60-year career. After the artist’s death in 1980, the Clyfford Still Estate was sealed from public and scholarly view. In 2004, Still’s wife, Patricia Still, selected the City of Denver to receive the substantial Still collection. The next year, she also bequeathed her estate, which included select paintings by her husband as well as his complete archives, to the city. The Clyfford Still Museum opened in 2011 and launched the multi-volume catalogue raisonné project in 2018 after completing the initial inventory of the Museum’s entire collection, which includes 95% of everything the artist created.

Roughly 256 Clyfford Still works are known to be held in other public institutions or private collections and 35 are held by unknown parties. To locate and verify information for the works held beyond the Museum, the CSM has launched a call for submissions from owners/representatives who have not yet responded to its request for information including title, dimensions, creation date, medium, provenance, exhibition and publication history. Works may be submitted for consideration in the catalogue at clyffordstillmuseum.org/clyfford-still-cr.

The editor for the complete works project is David Anfam. Bailey H. Placzek is the research and project manager. Dr. Anfam is a premier scholar on modern American art and author of the catalogue raisonné Mark Rothko: Works on Canvas (1998), which won the Mitchell prize in 2000. Placzek is the associate curator at the Clyfford Still Museum and has been actively engaged in the inventory and documentation of every work in the CSM’s collection since before the Museum’s opening in 2011. The publisher of the project will be announced at a later date.
