archstudio transforms traditional beijing dwelling into mirror-clad boutique

designboom_archstudio transformed a small individual building located in an old hutong neighborhood of beijing into a multi-brand boutique space. the traditional chinese courtyard dwelling’s original flat roof was replaced with a pitched structure and reduced its volume to integrate it into its context. the renovated exterior matches the building’s new function as a sophisticated retail space.

the architects redesigned the building to accommodate a boutique that hosts a variety of functions such as exhibitions, a showroom, a dining space as well as a potential venue available for rent. the main concept behind the design was to connect the interiors to the exteriors using mirrors and yards, creating an infinite field of vision in the limited space. this aimed to turn the architecture into a ‘garden’ featuring a series of changing scenes and experiences.

three courtyards connect the interior spaces and bring in ample sunshine and greenery. visitors enter through a daylight-filled yard and arrive at the first floor showroom, where furniture and other products are displayed and sold. surfaces are clad with mirrors that reflect the endless greenery and provide infinite views of each object displayed, creating an illusion between the real and the reflected.

the staircase is complemented by a 6m high vertical green wall, which zig zags upwards to the second floor. the second floor hosts the kitchen and dining table, both made out of terrazzo. the tables form an ‘L’ shape enabling close interaction between the chefs and diners.

the designers incorporated two terraces respectively situated on the north and south side of the second floor. this allows indoor activities to be extended outdoors, and for the space to become visually bigger. in the basement, the designers added a gleaming floor to brighten the underground space. it was repurposed into an area for displaying and selling garments, shoes and hats.

the color palette is neutral and the materials are white and reflective, minimally invasive in the space. the hall of mirrors has an LED lighting system that changes colors to adapt for the varying products and atmospheres. this way the boutique can adjust to the different needs of clients, activities and settings.
