Populous to redefine esports in saudi arabia

Designboom_ Global architecture studio Populous presents a luminous Esports arena designed for Qiddiya City, Saudi Arabia. The proposal will ‘redefine the esports experience,’ and will introduce the world’s largest combined total area of video screens and 4D haptic seats that allow spectators to sense, feel, and even smell the action of the video game — elements that may help to draw viewers into the immersive worlds of the game. The synergy of colossal suspended screens, haptic seats, and state-of-the-art AV systems aims to lend a fully immersive experience for viewers, a ‘fantasy world for fans’ at the Qiddiya City Esports Arena.

Planned to stand as a central landmark within Qiddiya City, the Esports Arena will align with the city’s ethos of ‘Play Life.’ Embodying the pillars of entertainment, sports, and culture, this work of architecture by Populous will host to both national and international esports events. As a cornerstone of the new Qiddiya Gaming and Esports District, it will stand as the world’s first mixed-use gaming and esports district, set to become the hub of gaming in the Middle East. The multifunctional, 5,155-seat venue will prioritizes the experience of both players and spectators. Through careful sightline studies and parametric design tools, the architects have ensured optimal seating configuration surrounding a suspended array of screens, the so-called ‘digital chandelier.’

Shireen Hamdan, Senior Principal and General Manager of Populous KSA comments: ‘The Qiddiya City Esport Arena is a state-of-the-art esports venue that will serve as a centrepiece for this incredible global gaming hub and be a complete representation of Qiddiya’s ‘Play Life’ ethos.’

We are proud to have been able to combine our extensive knowledge of esports facilities and technology with Qiddiya’s vision to create a world-leading arena for competitors and fans alike,’ adds Rhys Courtney, Senior Principal at Populous EMEA. ‘This arena will be unique in esports in both scale and user experience.’
